Housing insecurity during the pandemic (Webinar)

Even before the COVID pandemic, millions of Americans faced housing insecurity or instability—especially communities of color. During the pandemic, housing costs skyrocketed, leading to even more housing insecurity, despite COVID-era eviction moratoria that has now ended.

The pandemic unleashed a national housing problem of unprecedented magnitude. Even before the pandemic, millions of Americans faced housing insecurity or instability—especially communities of color. Renters of color often pay up to 50% of their household income toward housing costs. Rural households struggled—30% experienced at least one major housing challenge such as housing deficiencies, high costs or overcrowding. In recent years, the growth in availability of nonmortgage financing alternatives—which do not give borrowers adequate consumer protections and may not qualify for federal or state COVID-19 financial relief—have caused even more people to lose housing.
